Feb 2021: It's been a while...
A couple of things have happened since November 2019 - there's been a global pandemic, and Team Natrajan got Twitter. Two fairly good excuses for not keeping on top of the website newsfeed, we think? So here are a few highlights from the past year, and we'll try harder to keep it updated now!
A couple of things have happened since November 2019 - there's been a global pandemic, and Team Natrajan got Twitter. Two fairly good excuses for not keeping on top of the website newsfeed, we think? So here are a few highlights from the past year, and we'll try harder to keep it updated now!
- Congratulations to Ruth and Emma for successfully completing their MChem projects despite the unexpectedly early finish in March. It was a pleasure having them in the group for their final year!
- The Chemistry Department 2020 Postgrad Conference was held remotely this year, with third year PhD students presenting a mixture of research and lit review talks. Hannah presented a lit review about uranyl binding in proteins.
- Lockdown also proved a good opportunity to finish off some data analysis for publication, particularly Letitia's work with upconverting nanoparticles - check out our 2020 publications here.
- After over four months working from home, Team Natrajan returned to the lab in August 2020 and have been busy adapting our research to work around social distancing and being trapped in the one building - we do usually love our interdisciplinary research, and are pleased that at least some of the group have been able to go back into the Photon Science Institute recently!
- Manchester's postgrad taught Master's students were unfortunate to miss out on their lab-based projects this year, but Yangleihui Zhou successfully completed a computational version of her project looking at lanthanide complexes, with Matt - well done!
- In September we welcomed our new PhD student, Elliott! He will be working with porphyrins to develop new and improved pressure sensitive paint formulations, in a jointly supervised project with Dr Mark Quinn in Aerospace Engineering.
- Alongside PhD arrivals, we were also delighted to welcome Harriet and Alfred (King Li) as our MChem students for the year. Harriet will be working with Kieron on uranium coordination chemistry and luminescence, while Alfred has a joint project with Dr Darren Wilcox, looking at lanthanide catalysis. They have the added challenge this year of coming up with computational back-up projects, but we've got our fingers crossed that they'll be in the lab before long!
- Also in September, Ciarán went all the way to Russia from the comfort of his own flat, to attend the VI International School for Young Scientists, Magnetic Resonance and Phenomena in Chemical and Biological Physics.
- In October, Adam oversaw the install of our newest, shiniest piece of equipment - the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) kit. Keep an eye out for our future exciting projects with this!
- Jess passed her viva at the start of December, well done Jess! Since finishing her PhD, she has worked as a postdoc in nuclear materials at Lancaster, and moved on recently to work at Rolls Royce.
- We finished off 2020 with our first ever online Christmas social. We were joined by other researchers from the Inorganic Chemistry section (including our lab buddies, the Mills Group) for a special Louise Natrajan quiz, lots of drinking, and an unusual lack of embarrassing photos to look through the next morning!
- In January we welcomed our second new PhD student, Laura! She will be studying the interactions of uranium with geological minerals with the Natrajan group and Prof. Sam Shaw.
21-11-19 Congratulations to Tom!
Tom has been awarded his MSc degree after a year of working with us, well done! He is now starting a PhD in Lancaster with Prof Colin Boxal studying the electrokinetic decontamination of radioactivity in concrete.

24-05-16 Louise Presents at 'Pint of Science' Event
Louise was invited to participate in this year's Pint of Science talks at The Red Lion Pub in Withington, Manchester alongside Prof. David Leigh. The title of her talk was 'A Story of Radioactivity: A Glowing Tale'. Her narrative journey began with the story of the discovery of radioactivity, how people used radioactive tonics containing radium as regenerative health treatments and finished with the use of the fluorescent properties of uranium to aid in the long-term clean up of nuclear wastes. 05-04-16 Paper published
Louise has published an article in Chemical Communications detailing her collaboration with Professor Faulkner's group at Oxford University. The work describes how the long-lived red emission of a binuclear europium complex can be tuned to be unusually responsive to pH and that the complex exhibits remarkably different solution behavior to its monometallic counterpart. The study illustrates that lanthanide metal ions themselves can be utilized to tune the properties of an antenna chromophore, which opens up a range of new prospects for sensing and control of luminescence properties important in optical imaging and biological applications.
